d20 - Amulet of Tyranny (3e)

By Phil Smith and DPG Development (a d20 3e magical item from around 2001, I think)

This unique item is a heavy disc made of transparent metals, embellished with several tiny black crystals. Serpentine patterns are picked out on the back of the amulet in silver. If the patterns are subjected to a read magic spell, the holder of the ring becomes aware of its purpose: to unite all lawful evil beings under the control of the wearer. The ring of tyranny was in fact forged by the illithids thousands of years ago in an attempt to take control of the devils, but following the fall of their empire the ring was hidden deep beneath Arekoz.

The item enables gives the wearer free use of the Spell Focus (Enchantment) and Spell Penetration feats, and enables him to cast charm monster once per day, as if he were a 20th-level sorcerer (Will save DC 21 + wearer’s Charisma bonus negates). In addition, if the wearer is able to cast mind-affecting spells or manifest mind-affecting psionic powers, he may use the ring of tyranny's caster level if the target creature is lawful evil in alignment. Furthermore, the ring radiates a continual detect law and detect evil effect, as per the spells of the same name.

The amulet of tyranny is not without its drawbacks, however; it twists the mind of the wearer every time the charm monster ability is used, forcing the wearer to make a Will Save (DC 21 + wearer’s Charisma bonus) as if he had just been subjected to the same attack. Upon the each failed save, the wearer’s alignment shifts one step towards lawful evil. If the wearer is already of lawful evil alignment, each use of the amulet takes the wearer another step along the path of becoming a mind flayer, developing purple skin, facial tentacles, and so forth. After twenty uses the wearer is transformed into a standard illithid, losing all class levels. Only a carefully-worded wish or miracle can restore him to his original form.

Caster Level: 20th. Weight:-.
